Over 40,000 new books will be available in public libraries following the announcement today of an additional $1.2 million in State Government funding for public libraries.

The Minister for Local Government, Bob Cameron, said the Bracks Government would ensure the monies were divided equitably among Victoria's 78 councils and the State's two print disability library services.

"Library services will receive $I 5,000 for each member council to boost the volume and quality of their book stock.

"An extra $76,000 will go to non-metropolitan regional library services, in recognition of the additional costs placed on libraries in rural and regional areas.

"These monies are in addition to existing expenditure on public libraries under the Bracks Government's $24.6 million Public Libraries program and the $12 million Living Libraries program for building renovations and extensions.

"Total public library funding in 1998/99 was $24.6 million. The new total, following a considerable investment by the Blacks Government, is close to $30 million--an increase of 20.6%."

Mr Cameron said a special focus would be on the provision of books for children and teenagers.

"It's important that we develop a culture among the next generation of library users to appreciate the value of a good book," he said.

"Libraries provide a valuable service to our community, not only in terms of their resources but also as a centre for communal activity. …
