MOUSS Tales: Management and Operation of User Services

From the Chair

As RUSA's youngest section, MOUSS has evolved considerably over the years from the original MOUSS section to our current larger MOUSS one, incorporating former SUPS committees. And we may eventually look back on this past year as one laying the groundwork for yet more transformation. In 2001-02, David Null, MOUSS past section chair and last year's chair of the MOUSS Organization Committee, led our second MOUSS section review. Emilie Smart, chair of our MOUSS Services to Aging Population Committee, continues to serve on a RUSA task force looking at future directions for the division's organizational structure, including ones that may affect MOUSS. The issues, which MOUSS is grappling with as a section, echo some of our parent organization's concerns: How do we make sure that our programs reflect the issues which are important to reference librarians in a constantly changing information environment? What are our most important goals as a section? How do we communicate better to librarians about our programs and activities? How do we get more librarians excited about MOUSS and the opportunities it provides?

Key factors to our continuing success in responding to those questions in MOUSS and RUSA are the energy and commitment of our members, and my special thanks go to all those MOUSS committee and board members this past year who have contributed toward providing dynamic, useful, and practical programs for reference and public services librarians, front-line and management. …
