FRANK LEWINS is Head of the School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University. He has wide-ranging interests covering transsexualism, bioethics, China and changing patterns of social inequality. His recent publications include Transsexualism in Society: A Sociology of Male to Female Transsexuals (1995) and Bioethics for Health Professionals: An Introduction and Critical Approach (1996).

DEBORAH LUPTON is Professor of Sociology and Cultural Studies at Charles Sturt University. Her latest books are Risk (Routledge, 1999) and the edited volume Risk and Sociocultural Theory: New Directions and Perspectives (CUP, 1999). She is currently working on a book on risk and everyday life and a project looking at the sociocultural nature of `road rage'.

JO MORGAN is a PhD student at the University of Sydney.

GREG NOBLE is senior lecturer in Cultural Studies at the University of Western Sydney. He is a co-author of Kebabs, Kids, Cops and Crime (Pluto Press, 2000). He has recently been involved in researching questions of technology, material culture and identity.
