In Our Do'ers Profile, we highlight some of the hard-working and talented individuals in the public human services field. This issue features David A. Berns of El Paso County's Department of Human Services in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Name: David A. Berns

Title: Director, El Paso County Department of Human Services

Years of Service: I have served for five years in my current position, and 32 years in the field. Prior to my current position, I was director of the Office of Children's Services for the Michigan Family Independence Agency. Before that, I served 11 years as county social services director in Marquette, Wisconsin.

Rewards of the Job: I see so many opportunities to improve not only our agency but our entire community in ways that strengthen families and improve safety for our most vulnerable children. I am happiest when our staff and partners share my excitement and enthusiasm for trying new approaches.

Accomplishments Most Proud Of: We have always known that poverty plays a big role in bringing families into the child welfare system. I am most proud of my role in helping to develop specific strategies for reengineering TANE to be our primary prevention program for child welfare and for helping to develop child welfare into an antipoverty program. …
