Engineering offers many exciting career areas from the depths of the oceans to the space above us. While this article has focused on several aspects of civil and mechanical engineering as they relate to construction, there are also many opportunities for men and women in marine, computer and electrical engineering, robotics, industrial and manufacturing engineering, biotechnology, and other fields. As you study the engineering design process, you also may want to talk with your technology teacher or guidance counselor about a career in engineering and how to enter the field of engineering as a career. You will find that most engineering careers begin with a four- or five-year college degree program in a specific area of engineering. There are excellent salaries in the engineering field along with many challenging assignments. Some engineers work in an office almost exclusively involved with the design process, while others may be field engineers and spend most of their time on a job site supervising and managing construction or engineered projects. There are also many community college programs that provide career paths into the field of engineering. …
