There's no manual on how to be an ABA president. We learn on the job. And what I learned--as I traveled around the country, gave testimony in 'Congress, talked with reporters and met with many, many terrific bankers--is that our industry has a tremendously rich and diverse reservoir of talent, energy and financial expertise. Bankers are the ABA, and it's because of you that I can see only great things for our industry in the years ahead.

Over the past 12 months, bankers sent nearly 70,000 letters to Congress in support of a banker's right to broker real estate. That effort was especially commendable for an industry whose members are not widely known for their grassroots activism.

And on another Washington-related front, ABA--with your generous help--set a new fundraising record for BankPac, raising more than $1 million in a single year for our industry's Political Action Campaign.

This year ABA also formed a new affiliation with the Bankers' Association for Finance and Trade (BAFT), reflecting ABA's increasing role in advocating international banking policy.

ABA created a new partnership this year with secondary market leader Fannie Mae to help bankers lower mortgage-origination costs and expand their product lines. Your association-sponsored insurance company, the American Bankers Professional and Fidelity Insurance Company (ABPFIC), returned $4 million in underwriting profits to more than 950 financial institutions around the country this year.

ABA developed a Spanish language video to help Spanish-speaking consumers avoid becoming victims of predatory lending. …
