The Honorable Thomas M. Whalen III: An Insightful Pioneer

On March 4, 2002, Albany Law School and the entire Albany community lost an outstanding individual and friend when Thomas W. Whalen III was tragically killed in an automobile accident. At the time of his passing, former Mayor Whalen, who had served on the Board of Trustees of Albany Law School since 1986, was completing his final, third year as Chairman of the Board. During his tenure as Chairman, Tom strove to take the Law School from its isolated position in the Albany community into the lives of the citizens of the Capital District. It was during his leadership, that Albany Law became the mentor of the Albany Citizens Police Review Board. It was during his term as Chairman that the Law School began to reach out to the leaders of the local and state governments as well as business leaders in the area.

Tom led the Law School during its most ambitious fund-raising campaign in its 150 year existence. …
