Gerald McGhie relinquished his position as Director at the end of the year. At the final Standing Committee, the President, Sir Kenneth Keith, paid tribute to his achievements, not only in organising successful seminars but also in addressing the NZIR's financial problems. Brian Lynch will take up the directorship in April.

On 18 December the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Phil Goff, launched New Zealand and the Pacific: Diplomacy, Defence, Development, the proceedings of the NZIIA's Pacific seminar held earlier in the year, which were edited by Gerald McGhie and Bruce Brown. (See advertisement for details.)

The NZIIA also published Malcolm Templeton's Protecting Antarctica in December.

Also in December the NZIIA was saddened by the passing of Colin Aikman, one of its former Directors and an Honorary Vice President (see Obituary opposite).

The National Office moved premises within the university on 14 February. It is now located on Level 6 of Rutherford House, 23 Lambton Quay, Wellington. Its phone number is still the same but it has a new fax number: (04) 463-6568. …
