Russian Association for English Studies September 17-19, 2002

Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko, the presidents of Russia and Belarus, have not been on the best of terms since disagreeing last summer about a proposed union between their two countries. But no such disagreements were evident a short time later when members of the Russian Association for English Studies (RAES), Russian Association of Teachers of English Literature, Belarusan Association for American Studies, and Belarusan Association of Teachers of English held a joint conference at the Minsk State Linguistic University, September 17-19, 2002, in the Belarusan capital. This was the 12th annual conference for the RAES, but the first time it has met outside of Russia.

The conference theme, "The Problem of National Identity/-ies in the Literatures of the Old and the New World," seemed ideally suited for the occasion. Participants eagerly came not only from Russia and Belarus, but also from Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Ukraine, and the United States to discuss issues of images and stereotypes, and how national identity might be reflected in literature and everyday life. …
