This issue of JSGE is an eclectic, rather than thematic, one. Yet, it is through such a wide range of topics and diversity of the gifted individuals studied that we address the varied needs of gifted secondary students. The following group of articles illustrates both information about developing gifted students and methods to teach, counsel, assess, and motivate them. There should be something that hits close to home for everyone, as well as something a bit more exotic to pique interest.

Every year, seventh and eighth graders all over the country take out-of-level ACT and SAT tests as part of regional or local talent searches. What motivates these students to take the tests, and how do they feel about the experience? Do most prepare for the tests in some way, or do they go in cold just to see how they do? What is their parents' role in encouraging them to take the test, and why? These questions about motivation, preparedness, and feelings about taking the tests formed the basis of questionnaires that were administered to parents and students, and the results are reported in the article by Jarosewich and Stocking.

Another window into the mind of teens is the article by Stiraman on mathematical problem solving, which explores both the logical and affective components of gifted students' approaches to solving new types of problems. This is both a description of a student process and a guideline for an effective teaching strategy.

The article on the development of leadership skills by Chan illustrates both the effectiveness of providing students with specific instruction in leadership and the feasibility of designing reasonable program evaluation. …
