The remarkable enterprise which is the Recueil general des isopets - that is, the complete edition of all the medieval French versions of the Aesopian fables and their sources - reaches volume IV with the present volume (vols. I and II, edited by Julia Bastin, were published in 1929-30; vol. III, edited like the present one by Pierre Ruelle, in 1982). It is devoted to two different sets of fables: the Latin prose fables of Eude de Cheriton (fl. c.1180-after 1241), author among other things of the Parabolae, edited from Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Douce 88, chosen because it is almost certainly closely related to whatever manuscript was the source of the second half of Ruelle's edition: a prose translation into French of which a single manuscript, now in private hands, remains; it is Ruelle's opinion that this latter manuscript must have been copied in the west of France. …
