This is the second volume of a ten-volume history of German literature, of which vols 1-3 are devoted to the Middle Ages; for vol. 1 see the forthcoming review in MÆ 75. Vol. 2 is devoted to Old High German and consists of ten chapters by six contributors, divided up by genre. It is good to see the Old High German charms, Latin prose and verse, and the German (and German Latin) contribution to historical writing (ninth to twelfth century) given a significant place in the 'German' 'literature' of the period. The significance of the German writings of this period to early medieval European oral culture is given appropriate stress, although not perhaps with the same vigour as in W.
