The Proceedings of the Twelfth Societe Rencesvals Conference are divided into four major sections: `La matiere de France dans les pays du Nord', `L'expression de la foi dans les chansons de geste', `La representation de la femininite dans les chansons de geste', `Le theme de la revolte dans les chansons de geste' and, finally, the catch-all category of 'Miscellanea'. In addition to the four plenary battles (waged by Povl Skarup, Elisabeth Schulze-Busacker, Sarah Kay and Joel Grisward), there are thirty-seven minor skirmishes under the aegis of the main headings, plus three miscellanea. The volume thus reproduces the whole of the conference, and constitutes a convenient synthesis of major current research preoccupations. There is, inevitably, an element of unevenness: some of the contributions look as if they have been remaniees (...et augmentees) for the printed version and some, frankly, are not in the end much more than remaniements of existing scholarship, calling into question the need to publish everything which is said at such gatherings of the clans. The first section (on les pays du Nor) is less northern than might be expected, with several contributions dealing with Dutch and German versions.
