Idaho Extension Launches ID Theft Seminars

Idaho is ranked 26th in the United States for the number of reported cases of identity theft. The western states are the most popular target for identity crimes. To respond to this growing crime, Guarding Against Identity Theft was developed to help increase awareness of the risks and consequences of identity theft. The seminars taught throughout Idaho covered topics such as:

* What is identity theft?

* How does identity theft occur?

* How to protect your personal information

* What steps to take if your identity is stolen

More than 1,400 individuals have attended the seminars, which have been presented to a wide variety of audiences including: AARP, Chambers of Commerce, Senior Centers, Head Start, Community Action, Homemakers, Sons of the Utah Pioneers, retired teachers, religious based organizations, county government employees, and various clubs and professional associations.

As a result of the seminars and newspaper articles, a radio station presented a 1-hour call-in program that focused on identity theft.

When ask what they learned from the Guarding Against Identity Theft seminars participants shared:
