So many of us have owned a second-hand pair of bleached-out blue jeans and loved them until they fell to pieces. Some of us have even tucked them away for safe-keeping after they were no longer wearable. But, for how many of us did that pair of jeans have a life-altering effect? This "sisterhood" is a group of 4 fifteen year-old friends that share a pair of such jeans - and the jeans are quite life-altering in each of their opinions. For Tibby, Lena, Bridget, and Carmen, the jeans (Pants) mean support and love. They are jeans that help each of the girls learn that, perhaps, "there is more truth in how you feel than in what actually happens" (p. 793).
