This book provides a structure for applying diverse theories to the clinical practice of nursing. It offers concrete examples of selected middle-range theories for their use and application in practice. Undergraduate nursing students will find these examples extremely useful because many find the theorypractice connection difficult and challenging to understand. Examining phenomena of interest to nursing, such as conflict and depression, the authors outline the process of selecting an appropriate theory from which to base nursing interventions. Beginning with patterning cues from each client case presented, the authors explain the process of selecting an appropriate theory and applying it to a given client situation and nursing plan of care. For each selected theory, major concepts, theoretical definitions, and relational statements are delineated and described. The operationalization of major theoretical concepts avoids conflicting meanings between and among students and between and among individuals who use the middlerange theory. A detailed explanation of theory-specific nursing diagnoses and client-specific individualized plans of care emphasizing the interrelationship of theory and practice is outlined.

In addition, the authors provide theory-directed example that inform the proposed nursing plan of care, theoretical rationale for each nursing intervention, and both nurse- and client-focused evaluation of the nursing plan of care. The text concludes with a glossary of key nursing processes and theoretical terms, as well as a brief overview of the three levels of theory: grand, middle-range, and practice.

Overall, this text is well written and can provide guidance to undergraduate students and baccalaureate-prepared nurses in the provision of theory-directed, evidence-based nursing care. …
