the fear is in the sounds, it's no lie,

it's a freight train, only not for minutes,

for hours... a 10,000 car freight train

roaring past, around, over the house

at one hundred twenty miles per hour

it's in the transformers popping,

the trees and power poles cracking,

crashing to the ground, onto houses,

onto cars, through houses like through

butter

our survival is in the sounds, it's loud,

we break the silence of deeper suburbia

with the grind of generators and chainsaws.

in our american beirut, we begin to speak

to our neighbors, we share food and water,

we speculate, we work, we wait, on a transistor

radio, some poor bastard who lost everything

talks, he just talks, to us, so we'll all know that

all is not really lost. …
