The subtitle of Fulfilled in Our Hearing is a little misleading. It might better be phrased: "A History of the Methods of Modern Christian-Especially Catholic-Preaching." Indeed, the title itself makes allusion to the document Fulfilled in Your Hearing: The Homily in the Sunday Assembly, published by the National Council of Catholic Bishops in 1982, which has become a foundational document in Catholic homiletics. Guerric DeBona's book does trace the history of preaching-or more specifically the history of various methods of preaching, but it does so in a very cursory way until it reaches the last quarter of the twentieth century and the advent of what has come to be known as the New Homiletic. Even then it covers quickly what has been more fully described in Richard Eslinger's A New Hearing and The Web of Preaching or O. C. Edwards' A History of Preaching. However DeBona is writing primarily for a Catholic reader. It is when he turns his attention to Catholic preaching and more particularly to Catholic homiletic writing since the Second Vatican Council that he makes a unique contribution to the understanding of contemporary American Catholic approaches to preaching. …
