Although this book is clearly not intended for treatment as a scholarly effort, the publishers have elected to market it as such. Apparently intended for German undergraduates, it emphasizes personality and theology at the expense of synthesis and politics. John O'Malley's prize-winning Trent and All That merits a mention, but its reconceptualization of sixteenth-century Italian religious history is ignored as are numerous recent efforts, especially that by William Hudon. The basic framework still turns on judgments about what is or is not heretical, just one of the long shadows cast by Hubert Jedin. Central terms are left undefined, beginning with reform and corruption. The crucially important label evangelismo is problematized by quotation marks, no more, at the same time as its central if increasingly mythical instantiation in the ecclesia Viterbiensis is treated as simple fact. Figures and texts are usually linked through the problematic mechanism of influence. Here the Juan de Valdés of Massimo Firpo's influential but creaking formulation receives vastly too much credit. Perhaps the most serious shortcoming is that this book is not even a very useful introduction to current bibliography or to more than a handful of original texts.
