It is customary when a new editor takes over the role that they acknowledge the contribution of their predecessor and perhaps make a few comments about future directions for the journal. It is easy for me to do this in the case of Dr Bruce Ross because I have a huge amount of respect for his wisdom and contribution to the journal. While in his role as President of PENZ, he initiated and oversaw the magazine-style Physical Educator that was provided to every school in New Zealand. As editor of the PENZ Journal he had a strong passion to promote New Zealand scholarship and writing. I have had the pleasure of working alongside him for the past year as the deputy editor and feel somewhat assured now that I have moved into the editor's role that he is still just several offices away if advice is needed.

As for future directions, there are significant changes underway in the format of the journal. This edition will be the last one sent to members in hard copy. In the future, the journal will be web based and accessible through the PENZ website. There will still be some hard copies printed and available, but for members the journal will now be principally accessed through the internet. …
