Having practiced as an OB/GYN nurse practitioner when no one knew what nurse practitioners were and when members of the nursing profession vehemently quarreled over emerging roles and titles, I reviewed this book with a skeptical eye, expecting to find a shallow and glorified view. However, after careful reading, I found just the opposite. I even gained a better understanding and appreciation for how the concept of advance practice has evolved.

The authors of this slender paperback identify, define, and describe key concepts with sufficient breadth and depth, yet spare the reader from having to sift through trivial stories, chapter objectives, and end-of-chapter summaries and questions. The book is well organized into three main units: foundations, implementation, and transition to the advance practice role.

Despite the challenges presented by a health care system in a state of constant flux and constantly changing regulations, the authors provide a thorough account of the history of each of the four APN roles - nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist, nurse practitioner, and clinical nurse specialist - along with sociopolitical issues and controversies. They also provide insight into the roles played by key nursing organizations: the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, the National Association of Clinical Specialists, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, the American College of Nurse Midwives, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. …
