New Toolkit for Water and Healthy Ageing in Care Homes

The Society has contributed to a new toolkit and website to assist care managers, care caterers and other service providers with the information and resources to develop best practice in regard to consumption of water in care homes for older people.

The initiative was led by Water UK, The Royal Society for the Promotion of Health, the Royal Institute of Public Health and the National Association of Care Catering, in cooperation with The Commission for Social Care Inspection. The toolkit was created through an alliance of stakeholders chaired by The Society. This work is an excellent example of a health promotion initiative between industry and health sectors.

Society Chairman Paul Madgwick said: "Drinking sufficient water is vitally important for older people, and the health benefits are well documented. In some care settings it can be hard to encourage older people to drink. Through this toolkit, The Royal Society for the Promotion of Health wishes to ensure that all carers have access to water policy guidance and that older people get the right health messages about drinking healthy water". …
