Visitors to the Society's web site have seen our first tentative steps taken toward digitizing portions of our rich historical resources. From book jackets to objects in current museum exhibitions, images scanned from a host of sources within the confines of Battle Abbey are featured on the site.

Recently, the Society has moved further into the brave new world of digital imaging with a project funded by Trustee Alan Voorhees. Through his good offices, the Society was invited to join the Library of Congress and the Library of Virginia in creating the American Civil War Maps digital database, a part of the American Memory section of LC's web site. This comprehensive effort allows the Society to share with an international audience images of more than 400 maps from the Robert K. Sneden diaries and scrapbooks, the Jeremy Gilmer collection of Confederate engineer maps, and other manuscript collections. Mr. Voorhees's generous grant, which is funding needed equipment, scanning costs, and salary support, enables the Society's participation in this enterprise. …
