This Companion to the Middle English Lyric, suitably dedicated to Douglas Gray, makes a most welcome addition to the Boydell and Brewer Companion series and to studies of the medieval lyric more generally. The highly influential yet disparate and slippery genre of lyric, often taught but still too little written on, seems an especially appropriate topic for a Companion volume. Following two more textual and technical essays (Julia Boffey on manuscripts; Thomas G. Duncan on metre and editorial practice), the volume progresses largely by kind. John Scattcrgood writes on the love lyric before Chaucer; Vincent Gillespie on moral and penitential lyrics; Christiania Whitehead on religious lyrics; Douglas Gray on courtly lyrics. …
