Dorothy L. Savers is most commonly recognized as a great writer of detective fiction, though some people remember her cycle of plays on the life of Christ, The Man Born to Be King. However, Savers is also an interesting example of a lay theologian, who tackled a variety of controversial topics in an effort to convey the meanings of Christianity to her culture. Laura Simmons investigates this aspect of Savers s work in Creed without Chaos.

Simmons examines Savers s writing precisely as the work of a lay theologian. The focus is upon Savers as one who "brings the data of laypeople's lives and experiences into dialogue with the Christian community" (p. 18). Consequently, this book takes seriously the historical context of Sayers's writing, its form and its relation to the circumstances of her life. This has had an impact on Simmons's research strategy, which includes a careful perusal of Sayers's available correspondence, both published and unpublished.

A further virtue of the book is its readability and accessibility. Without compromising the quality of her work, Simmons has managed to compose a book which can be recommended to the interested non-specialist, as well as the theologian. Moreover, the book includes a chapter with suggestions on how to employ Savers s work pedagogically, so that Sayers's work may continue to be accessible and beneficial in just the way that she intended. …
