Everyone Loves a Good Story

What was your favorite story as a child? Was it the pictures, the story, rhyme, or colors that endeared it to you? Did that story teach you anything about life? Is there an occasion to share that story in your family and consumer sciences (FCS) classroom or program today?

Everyone loves a good story. Reading brings back pleasant memories of being read to by our parents or others. Literacy is encouraged when students are continually exposed to stories and books. Children's literature is rich in examples relative to FCS content and can be used appropriately in intermediate and secondary classrooms. Teachers can encourage students to discover their parents' favorite stories and share them with the class. Generational links will be strengthened as stories from siblings, parents, and grandparents are shared.

Use a book or story to introduce a new topic, encourage discussion of a difficult subject, or provoke thoughtful interaction. Children's stories can direct the class, make them laugh, or calm them in times of crisis. September 12th, written by first grade students at H. Byron Masterson Elementary School in Kennett, MO, is a beautiful and positive children's perspective of hope and optimism in trying times.

One of the best uses of literature is capitalizing on the introduction of sensitive topics and content. Emotionally charged issues can be tempered or approached with a good story. …
