Stewart W. Holmes, who earned his Ph.D. in English at Yale, has taught students in preparatory schools and colleges and universities. He worked as editor and collaborator with authors of English textbooks and wrote English in Action Composition, English in Action Grammar, and Meaning in Language. His Zen Art for Meditation, published in 1973 and continuing in print, has a companion volume, Zen Haiku (2000). A German edition of Zen Art for Meditation has the title Tuschespuren in der Ewigkeit: Meditationen uber Kunstwerke des Zen.

Many of his articles have appeared in ETC: A Review of General Semantics and in other publications of the International Society for General Semantics as well as publications of the Modern Language Association. Dr. Holmes currently composes weekly essays for a Zen meditation group.
