John R. Logan and Glenna D. Spitze provide a solid contribution to the field of family relations with this book about parents and their adult children. Their general goal is to contribute to the debate on family decline by addressing issues related to later life families. As the authors point out, most of the discussion of family decline has concentrated on issues affecting younger families and has ignored issues of later life. Although these have been issues of concern to gerontologists, researchers have not used this to inform the debate over the future of the family. For example, the concern of scholars and policymakers about the effect of changing demographics and family structure on the availability of care for the elderly is also related to the declining role of the family in providing for the well-being of individuals.
