Oct 30: Islamic Jihad, the militant Palestinian group, announced that four of its members were arrested by Palestinian police as Israel stepped up demands on Yasir `Arafat to crack down on extremists. [BBC, 10/30]

Nov. 7: A Palestinian court ordered the release of two militants of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, who were arrested in connection with the assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi. [BBC, 11/7]

Nov. 13: Palestinian students cast ballots for student council offices in the first election of any kind since the current insurrection against Israeli occupation began. The election was closely watched to determine any shifts in Palestinian popular opinion. The majority of votes went to the Islamic bloc, which included the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and Islamic Jihad. Yasir `Arafat's Fatah movement won 34 percent of the vote. [WP, 11/13]

Nov. 15: Palestinian police arrested a top Islamic Jihad militant, Mahmud al-Tawalbi, sparking an anti-`Arafat protest, which involved about 3000 Palestinians in the West Bank town of Jenin. [WSJ, WP, NYT, 11/15] Nov. 16: Palestinians vented their anger with Yasir `Arafat's governing Palestinian Authority, as they clashed with Palestinian security forces in Jenin. Nov. 23: Five Palestinian boys were killed on their way to school when an explosive detonated beneath them at the crest of a sand dune in the Gaza Strip, near an Israeli settlement. …
