Hermann von Werden's verse commentary on the Proverbia Salomonis, dated 1226, belongs 'in the long sequence of Bible poets of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries' that includes Lawrence of Durham, Matthew of Vendôme, and Petrus Riga; the work seems to be conceived as a 'supplement' to the latter's Aurora. According to the editor, it follows Bede's commentary on Proverbs so closely that one might consider it very largely a versification of Bede rather than an independent commentary. Even though the Hortus deliciarum had been described and partially edited by Pitta in the nineteenth century, it had since been lost and has only recently been rediscovered by the editor and (independently) by Jeffrey Hamburger. …
