With the publication of Susan Irvine's edition of the E-text of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, also known as the Peterborough Chronicle, Boydell and Brewer's Anglo-Saxon Chronicle series has now issued all the main texts of the Old English chronicle. This volume amply fulfils the general editors' early ambition of providing full introductions, textual apparatus, and thorough indexes of personal, people, and place names. While two previous editions of the E chronicle are still available readily enough, both have deficiencies which make this new edition necessary. Earle and Plummer's 1892/1899 edition has been rendered less and less useful by the passing of time (and its difficult format), while Clark's excellent 1957 edition (second edition 1970) suffered the major defect of editing only the annals for 1070-1154. This new edition will make an excellent scholarly companion to the facsimile edited by Whitelock fifty years ago. Building on the work of earlier scholars, Irvine's extensive introduction provides a much fuller account of both Bodleian MS Laud Misc. 636 and its text than any previous edition. …
