FIRST EDITOR OF THE COLLEGE STUDENT AFFAIRS JOURNAL

It is an honor to have been asked to develop a memorial statement to Dr. Jesse C. Sawyer. "Buzz" Sawyer was the name most of us used to refer to him. He and I worked together for over a decade at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and I had great respect for him. When he had an idea in which he believed, he would pursue it. He was never afraid of a challenge.

The Southern College Personnel Association (SCPA) was the name established by the original founders of our organization in 1950-51. At the annual SCPA convention in 1977 at Birmingham, Alabama, it was voted to establish a professional journal for the membership. Buzz was selected as the editor and the first issue of the journal was published in 1978.

He and his staff at UAB worked tirelessly to gather information, arrange it into the form of a journal, get it published, and distribute it to college student affairs administrators and faculty in 10 southern states. He continued to serve as editor through the 1980s. After playing a strong role in establishing the journal, he stopped being the editor when he moved to Baylor University as a chief student affairs administrator. …
