Article excerpt

Editorial Peer Review: Its Strengths and Weaknesses By ANN C. WELLER. Information Today, Inc., American Society for Information Science and Technology. Monograph Series, Medford, NJ, 2001, 325 pages, $44.50, ISBN: 157387100.

EDITORIAL PEER REVIEW: Its Strengths and Weaknesses analyzes the peer review process of journals to determine whether it is effective in ensuring the quality and integrity of articles published in journals. To meet this goal, Weller conducted her own analyses of articles published in English language journals from 1945-1997 that focused on peer review studies. These studies looked at rejection rates and the characteristics and behavior of editors, authors, and peer reviewers. This book contains the results of Weller's analyses as well as her recommendations for improving the editorial peer review process.

Chapter One introduces the reader to the editorial peer review process, using various definitions and explaining its history and development. The method of literature review and analysis used by Weller to conduct her study is explained. Chapter Two describes the findings on rejected manuscripts. Chapter Three looks at issues related to editors and editorial review boards. Chapter Four describes the problems that can occur with authorship. Chapters Five through Nine present reviewer agreement statistics, problems with reviewer bias, peer review of statistical analyses, and the use of peer review in an electronic environment. Chapter Ten ends the book with overall conclusions and recommendations and suggests a model for improved editorial peer reviews.

Chapters Two through Nine each opens with background information about the chapter topic. …
