One of the great translators of medieval spiritual texts is joined by one of the great scholars of the genre in this volume originally published in hard cover by Brepols as part of its "Medieval Women: Texts and Contexts" series.

The book contains vitae from the rich literature of the thirteenth century Low Countries. The three works by Goswin of Villers included here are The Life of Ida (he Compassionate of Nivelles, The Life ofAbundas, A Monk of Villers, and The Life of Arnulf, Lay Brother of Villers. Each is meticulously researched and translated, with abundant footnotes not just on the text, but on the monastic customs and contemporary life related in the text, on other writings referenced or implied within the text and on various problems of interpretation. The translations themselves are smooth and readable while giving a sense of a distinct style of Goswin.
