THE obvious question is: 'Why these 4 Vs?'Which is exactly what Peter Shaw asks at the beginning of this book. The answer is laudable: they link together personal and organisational priorities. This is a great dream for all, and the author makes a valiant attempt to give us what we want, although it is not wholly successful.

There is much to admire in the painstaking, accurate reportage of conversations and interviews and the detailed analysis, which produces some gems, such as that of Ken Boston (QCA): "Dream dreams, but recognise that you will have more hallucinations than visions".

Unfortunately, the same attention to detail hinders the flow of the book and.. .1 hate to say this... makes it a little dull. I hasten to add that this may also be a function of the worthiness and high moral values associated with the subject matter, or even of the relentless text (I confess I am a 'picture' person), which gives an impression of intensity. …
