Among the various things I have written, the essays and reviews collected in this volume seem to me the most likely to hold a measure of enduring interest. Three referees for the American Philosophical Society generously agreed, for which vote of confidence I am grateful. They further suggested that it would be well to arrange the pieces, not chronologically, but in broad topical categories, and also to provide introductory remarks in order to situate them in the circumstances wherein they were written. I have enjoyed following that advice and hope that having done so does not lend an unduly autobiographical character to the collection.

I am beholden to the American Philosophical Society Held in Philadelphia for Promoting Useful Knowledge for considering that presenting these writings in its Transactions conforms to its mission. A special word of thanks is due to the Society's Editor, Mary McDonald, for shepherding them skilfully and tactfully through the press.
