To say that cardiovascular disease is a major killer and is therefore worthy of study and thus prevention is stating the obvious, especially to readers of this vehicle. Indeed, this work enters an already (justifiably) crowded market. However, the fact that this is the second edition underlines the success of the book, and it is easy to see why.

The layout and subjects of the 17 chapter headings (split into three parts) will be familiar to many. Part one introduces pathology - the concept of the unstable plaque, which theory dictates will rupture and thus cause a myocardial infarction. In turn, additional causes of the disease, which include the damage to the endothelium, and inflammation, are focused upon. Having established the pathology, chapters in the second section look at the major risk factors - lipids, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, tobacco and mental stress. There is also a chapter on women and coronary artery disease which merely states the obvious (i.e. risk factors are not sex-specific) but also looks at the effects of the menopause and on HRT. …
