Gathering in Faith, Hope, and Love at Trinity

Article excerpt

-for John Palmer Croneberger Bishop of Newark

February 26, 2000

Above the river's tidal salt and fresh,

On Rector Street in the church whose spire

Reached heavenward over dispossessed natives,

Africans in chains, immigrants, and George

Washington's Continentals, we celebrate

A new command at the helm of the New Ark

Led by the Spirit into the new

Millennium. May the waters be calm

For our Bishop and his Marilyn,

The yoke placed upon them be easy,

The burden laid on them be mild.

Let us sing new songs of praise with them,

Thanksgiving and praise with them,

And pray for renewal consequent to our prejudices

Drowning in the flood of Justice,

The sea of Mercy, that we may

Harmonize at the fountain of Living Water.

May he help us all to risk each day

Our indebted spirits for the Gospel

That they in turn may be fulfilled

By the cascading glory of Love.

May he teach us to drain the toxic swamps

Within us and around us, the pollution

Of separation, hatred, arrogance,

Greed, poverty, ignorance, racism,

And thereby preserve and protect

The gift of creation

For all generations

Who follow. …
