The Hymn Society Announces 85th Anniversary Hymn Searches

As part of the celebration of The Hymn Society's 85th Anniversary, the Executive Committee is initiating two hymn searches, one for texts and one for tunes. The deadline for submissions for both searches is May 1, and the winning text and tune will be featured at the annual conference in Ottawa. For each search, the creator of the winning entry will receive $500, and The Hymn Society will retain the copyrights for the winning entries.

In an age when the gap between the rich and the poor is growing ever wider, people of faith need to keep in mind Jesus' teaching that "the least of these" should be the ones who are welcomed and served. While economic depravation underlies many of the other forms of impoverishment, the lack of access to educational, political, and judicial systems also perpetuates the chasm between the privileged and the deprived. Examples are regrettably numerous and identifiable: in our communities, in newspapers and magazines, on television and radio, in the appeals that arrive daily in our mailboxes (both electronic and postal). …
