Collected Song Cycles

Article excerpt

COLLECTIONS ARGENTO, DOMINICK (b. 1927). COLLECTED SONG CYCLES. High Voice and Low Voice volumes. Boosey & Hawkes, Inc., 2006 (Hal Leonard). High Voice Contents: Songs about Spring; Six Elizabethan Songs; Letters from Composers; To Be Sung upon the Water; Miss Manners on Music. Low Voice Contents: Songs about Spring; Six Elizabethan Songs; From the Diary of Virginia Woolf; The Andrée Expedition; Casa Guidi; Miss Manners on Music.

We are fortunate indeed to have all the song cycles of Dominick Argento combined in these two new collections. In addition to the music, there are in each volume articles excerpted from the composer's autobiography Catalogue Raisonné As Memoir: A Composer's Life. A biographical sketch opens the volume, followed by the Composer's Preface in which Argento discusses his approach to and experiences of the act of composing. In addition to these interesting articles, there are fairly extensive Composer's Comments on each cycle.

Since all of the cycles except the newest one, Miss Manners on Music reviewed above, are by now more or less familiar to the classical vocal community, no further commentary is needed on these volumes except to say that they belong in every music library and every studio that serves advanced singers.
