Oct. 19: Syrian authorities announced that they would release the ninth of ten political dissidents who were arrested in May for signing a petition that demanded the normalization of relations with Lebanon. Upon writer and activist Michel Kilo's release, it was suspected that the remaining prisoner was Anwar al-Bunni, a well-known human rights attorney. [BBC, 10/19]

Oct. 20: According to information leaked to United Press International by a London-based diplomat, Saudi King 'Abdullah bin 'Abd al-'Aziz met with 'Abd al-Halim Khaddam, the former Syrian Vice President. Khaddam had been declared a traitor by Damascus after revealing that President Bashar al-Asad threatened former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Al-Hariri months before his assassination in February 2005. Self-exiled to Paris, Khaddam launched the opposition National Salvation Front with 'AIi Sadreddine al-Bayanouni, head of the illegal Syrian Muslim Brotherhood. [UPI, 10/20]

Nov. 2: According to Syrian Central Bank Governor Dr. Adib Mayala, Syria "would rid itself of the relationship between the Syrian lira and the US dollar at the beginning of the upcoming year." Syria planned to exchange its foreign currency surplus of approximately $20 million for Euros and use the difference to pay its foreign debts. …
