JuI. 18: Unknown gunmen stormed and destroyed the home of Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmud 'Abbas and seized three bodyguards. Abbas was not at home at the time and Hamas authorities denied responsibility for the plot. [BBC, 7/18]

Aug. 14: Unknown assailants kidnapped journalist Steve Centanni and freelance cameraman Olaf Wiig of Fox News at gunpoint in Gaza City. Palestinian security forces sent out a search team for the two men. [BBC, 8/15]

Aug. 27: The Holy Jihad Brigades freed the two Fox News journalists abducted on August 14. The men stated that they had been forced at gunpoint to say that they had converted to Islam. [BBC, 8/27]

Sept. 2: Tens of thousands of Palestinian civil servants went on strike in protest of their wages being withheld by the PA government. The government had only paid its employees for one of the past six months of work due to the impact of Israeli, US, and EU sanctions. [BBC, 9/2]

Sept. 11: PA President Mahmud 'Abbas brokered a tentative deal with Hamas to create a national unity government. The agreement represented an attempt by 'Abbas to end Palestine's economic isolation from Israel and its foreign trading partners. Since Hamas won the majority of seats in the Palestinian Legislative Council in January 2006, the United States and European Union had halted aid to the PA, and Israel had withheld the transfer of $50 million per month in taxes and customs receipts normally allocated to the Authority. …
