Can a wordless book be a vocabulary book? Wordless books force the reader to interpret and construct their meaning, leading to the quest for the right words. Like many of the newer wordless picture books, this is a complex and interesting story, and is not necessarily for the very young or the pre-literate. A city in snow, a young child (who could be a girl or a boy), an empty sidewalk, a surprise: something red sticks out of the snow - thus starts an enchanting story that will excite those who unfold its meaning. The "something" is a book, but this book has the amazing ability to take the reader from the snowy sidewalk to a sandy beach, where another child is seen looking back from the pages of the book, at the reader. …
