This collaboration of Scieszka and Smith will be much appreciated by readers with a taste for the off-beat and the wacky (like their The Stinky Cheese Man and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs), if not as much by older people who, matters of taste aside, were taught to read by memory more than through context. This book might be a bit confusing upon first read, yet it attests to the fact that new words do not always have to be learned by memorizing, that they can be understood even if they are wholly foreign.

In the story, a wide-eyed, bat-eared, green Henry P. Baloney must come up with "one very good and very believable excuse" for his no-nonsense, greenish teacher, or face Permanent Lifelong Detention for being late once too often. …
