Gooney Bird Green makes her second literary appearance after having been introduced in 2002, a delightful new character for Lowry who has given us some of the most memorable children's literature of our time. Gooney Bird tells "absolutely true stories, offers tips to fellow storytellers, and loves a challenging vocabulary word." She also loves to punctuate her stories with new additions to her vocabulary: when a classmate points out her socks that don't match, she explains that "Most often, wearing matching things gives me a feeling of ennui," which sends teacher Mrs. Pidgeon and the class straight to their dictionaries. Her classmates love her (as will readers), they especially love when she says, "suddenly ..." because they know a story is forthcoming. …
