Article excerpt

ACAMPORA, PAUL (2006). Defining Dulcie. New York: Dial/Penguin ISBN 0803730462.

In another New England setting, this time a small Connecticut town, first-time novelist Acampora has brought to life Dulcie Morrigan Jones, who has lost her father in a freak accident and whose mother now wants to take Dulcie to San Francisco to start a new life. Her journey home is not the focus of the story, although she experiences some wonderful only-in-America moments and meets some memorable people. When she does get home, her grandfather and her mother have already decided that she can stay but must work the rest of the summer to pay for taking the truck and a credit card. …
