SCHUMANN, ROBERT (1810-1856). DICHTERLIEBE für Singstimme und Klavier, Opus 48. Originalausgabe für hohe Stimme. Herausgegeben von Kazuko Ozawa. G. Henle Verlag, Urtext Edition, 2005.

_____. LIEDERKREIS für Singstimme und Klavier, Opus 24. Originalausgabe für hohe Stimme. Herausgegeben von Kazuko Ozawa. G. Henle Verlag, Urtext Edition, 2006.

These new Urtext editions of Schumann's first and second song cycles composed in 1840, his "year of song," are welcome additions to the catalog of scholarly editions available to discriminating singers. Editor Kazuko Ozawa has provided extensive scholarly and interesting prefaces as well as detailed notes on each song and each source. Ozawa consulted both Robert and Clara Schumann's personal copies of the various first editions of these songs and, in addition, an autograph working manuscript of some of the songs.

The prefaces contain much interesting biographic material about Schumann and also some notes on Heinrich Heine and his books of poetry. The Dichterliebe volume has an Appendix containing the four songs not included in the final version of the cycle. These volumes should be in every music library and in the personal library of all teachers and performers of these cycles.
