The Concept of Retirement

I think all of us hold differing views of retirement. For some, it is the complete absence of work. For others, it is the opportunity to shift focus from a regimentized work day to that of doing something they always wanted to do, but didn't have the time to pursue. Still others opt for entering a brand new professional field. I remember my sister-in-law mentioning to me when she retired from the public school system where she was teaching, that she had always wanted to be a minister. I asked her what was stopping her and to go for it - which she did. She is now a minister and is quite busy. Then there are the military people who have two or three retirements - I call them the very bright people of our era. The closer you come to real live retirement age, the better those retirement checks look.

I have often heard friends state that they are working harder during retirement than they ever did at their old regular paying job. What I am seeing is that persons are going through two and three retirements, where they retire from the jobs of their youth and enter new fields of employment. Nurses of all persuasions, in large numbers are having to make the decision about how they will spend their retirement years and what they will be doing.

Many of you already know that I have retired from Chicago State University where I was employed as assistant dean of the College of Health Sciences and for the last seven months of my employment also served as interim chair of the Department of Nursing. …
