Welcome to the April, 2004 issue of JAME. Our first article, "A Historical Perspective Approach for Practicing Managers to Improve Ethics," is written by Larry McKee and is a good lead-in to our upcoming October issue dedicated to ethics in management. If you have an article in this area, be sure to contact our special issue editors, Randi Sims ( or Eileen Kelly ( McKee's article examines organizational and individual aspects of ethics and takes a historical perspective in presenting a qualitative approach to ethical behavior. The article provides a model for our readers to use in reviewing the ethical behavior of their own organizations and employees.

Our second article is by frequent JAME contributor Shawn Carraher and his coauthors, Paul Mulvey, Vida Scarpello, and Ronald Ash. In "Pay Satisfaction, Cognitive Complexity, and Global Solutions: Is a Single Structure Approach Appropriate for Everyone?" Carraher et. al. continue their work in the area of pay satisfaction by using 41 data sets to reexamine the dimensions of the Pay Satisfaction Questionnaire (PSQ) concentrating on cognitive complexity. Among the conclusions for practicing managers is the awareness that the solution to pay satisfaction dilemmas may vary according to the cognitive complexity of the specific employees involved.

Next, William Nelson and Anne Nelson present, "Re-Evaluating the Business Sourcing Model in Electronic Commerce Initiatives." In this article, the authors advise that in order for electronic commerce firms to be successful, they must re-evaluate their business sourcing by evaluating all sourcing opportunities in an environment which is nonlinear, alliance-focused and decentralized. Fourth, another frequent JAME contributor, Dana Tesone, takes us to cyberspace in his "Fourth Generation Online Learning for Business and Hospitality Management Schools: So Far, So Fast." Tesone provides a practical overview of where we are in terms of online education and how we are moving into what he calls the "fourth generation" of online learning.

The fifth article, "Knowledge Based Resources and Organizational Capabilities: A Study of New Entry," is written by William Burpitt. This study correlates organizational learning styles and behaviors with success in entering new markets. Data for this study was collected in two phases from architectural and architectural/engineering firms. Postitive correlations were found between the firm's amount of new entry activity and it learning orientation, the use of experiential and experimental learning, its absorptive capacity and its collective efficacy. …
