When we began publishing TheatreForum 15 1/2 years ago (this being issue #31), we made the decision that we would celebrate eclecticism. We would not organize issues around a theme, an ethnicity, or a political boundary. Each issue has been full of all kinds of diversity. But in this issue we are also enjoying a bit of coincidence in that three of the articles are about theatres that have much in common.

The Rude Mechanicals of Austin, Texas, Out of Hand Theater in Atlanta, Georgia, and Circus Contraption of Seattle, Washington, share many things. They all have an exuberant spirit which celebrates theatrical vitality. They share a fascination with the macabre, circus techniques, a deep irreverence, and the desire to make theatre that is full of inventive fun that is sometimes hilarious, sometimes creepy, and sometimes frightening but is always exciting and unexpected and draws young audiences. We are delighted to have in-depth articles which not only describe their theatre works but also the creative processes of these innovative theatre companies. …
